UPDATE 1-India monsoon 68 pct below normal in June 24 wk

NEW DELHI, June 25 (Reuters) - India's monsoon rains for the week ended June 24 were 68 percent below normal, the India Meteorological Department said on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the weather office said total rainfall from the crucial June-September monsoon would be only 93 percent of the long-term average, coming in below normal for the first time in four years. S

For the week ended June 24, countrywide monsoon rainfall was 13.6 mm against normal rainfall of 42.6 mm, the weather office said on its website: http://www.imd.gov.in/section/hydro/dynamic/weelly-rainfall.htm

Four of 36 national zones were still to receive any monsoon rain. Rains were normal in two areas and excess in three during the week, while 27 zones recorded deficit to scanty rains.

The monsoon hit the southern coast on May 23, ahead of the normal date of June 1, but has since progressed weakly.
