MUMBAI, July 2 (Reuters) - India's output of nine oilseeds including soybean and rapeseed is estimated to fall 5.5 percent to 28.13 million tonnes in 2008-09 compared to previous year, the finance ministry said in a survey on Thursday.
"Total production of the nine oilseeds is estimated at 28.13 million tonnes, which is about 5.5 per cent lower than the production in 2007-08 and about 11.4 per cent lower than the targeted production for 2008-09, the survey said.
The output in the kharif season for which sowing was done between June-September 2008 is estimated to have fallen 12.3 percent, the survey said. The fall has mainly been due to an expected drop in the soybean output.
The winter-sown oilseeds, which includes rapeseed, the second most important oilseed, is estimated to have risen 10.1 percent, the survey said.
Oilseeds are crushed to produce vegetable oils, which can be used for edible purpose, and oil meal, which is mainly used as cattle and poultry feed.
India imports over 40 percent of its edible oil requirement and an expected drop in oilseeds output in 2008/09 has pushed up imports of edible oils.
