NEW DELHI, Aug 14 (Reuters) - A panel of Indian officials has asked the federal food ministry to expedite sugar imports, the Financial Express reported on Friday, citing the Press Trust of India news agency.

Three state-run firms have managed to contract only 100,000 tonnes of whites, while the government had asked them to contract up to 1 million tonnes, the report said.

Government officials say India -- the world's top sugar consumer -- is likely to produce about 15 million tonnes in the year to September, down 43 percent from a year ago due to lower sugarcane availability. (Reporting by Mayank Bhardwaj; Editing by Himani Sarkar)
