JAIPUR, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Over 50 percent of the standing guar crop in Rajasthan, accounting for four-fifth of the country's guar area, has been damaged due to poor monsoon, a top official said on Monday.
"More than 50 percent of the standing crop in the state has been damaged till date due to poor monsoon," Harbans Singh Yadav, additional director in the farm department, told Reuters.
"The state has so far received 34 percent deficit rains till date this year, resulting in damage to all the crops," he added."
He said almost 80 percent crop has been lost in the western part, while limited crop has been damaged in Sirohi, Udaipur, Bhilwara, Chittaurgarh and a few adjoining districts, which received isolated rains during the sowing period.
"Output is expected to be down by 75 to 80 percent this year. The deficit rains have also damaged crop in Pakistan and this is expected to keep the prices of the crop up this year," Sanjay Talwadia, a Bikaner-based trader, told Reuters.
Guar is generally a rain-fed monsoon crop in Rajasthan and requires 8-15 inches of rain in 3-4 spells.
