Relax sugar limit, India industry tells govt-paper

NEW DELHI, Sept 1 (Reuters) - Lobby group Confederation of Indian Industry has asked the government to allow companies to stock sugar needed for 30 days consumption, the Financial Express reported on Tuesday.

Faced with weak monsoon rains, lower output and rising sugar prices, the federal government had in August ordered companies to limit their stocks to 15 days consumption. The move was to help improve domestic supply.

The government gave companies 21 days to lower their stocks. The industry lobby group said the mandated time was inadequate and wanted 45 days to follow the limit, the newspaper said.

Many state governments have asked food and beverage companies to give details of sugar stocks they hold.

The firms, including Coca-Cola , Nestle and PepsiCo India , had asked CII to take up the issue with the government.
