Groundnut production may fall by one million tonnes

GB Patel, one of the eminent oil experts in the country, said India may produce only 3.3 million tonnes of groundnut this kharif, about a million tonnes less than a year earlier because of drought which has deeply affected sowing areas across the country.

"During this kharif season productivity is under stress which may dip groundnut output by about 9-10 lakh tonnes from 4.2 million tonnes in the same season last year," Patel said. The ministry of agriculture also said that sowing area had slumped drastically this year.

Last year, the government estimated to produce 5.63 million tonnes of soya bean in the kharif season but failed to achieve the target by registering only about 4.22 million tonnes.

At present, India accounts for about 9.3% of world oilseeds production. Yet, over 45% of edible oil available in India is imported. The bulk of edible oil India imports is of Malaysian and Indonesian origin. Currently, India has approximately 320 crude edible oil refining units, 60-70% of which are small.
